The first contacts between the Indian airline and the Brazilian manufacturer emerged in August, when the market was discussing several dozen jets from the E-Jet E2 family. The figures now known take the deal to a much larger scale. IndiGo has not said which type it would choose or whether it would buy more than one.

For Embraer, the order would expand its presence in India's civil market, a front it is pursuing alongside defence work. IndiGo flies an Airbus A320neo fleet and ATR 72-600 turboprops on regional routes, so an Embraer order would add a third manufacturer. Until a formal agreement is announced, the 100-jet figure cannot be counted as a firm order.
